Introduction
The keyboard segment of the computing industry
is a relatively stable market with similar product lines from a number
of manufacturers. Most
QWERTY keyboards can be segmented into traditional keyboards or split
style keyboards such as the Microsoft Natural Keyboard (which angles
and separates the keys to provide an ergonomic way of typing). Any other
innovation in keyboard design has recently involved either adding specialized
function keys or adding USB ports or cutting the keyboard cable thereby
making it wireless. A company called Auravision has decided to take a
different and unique approach by creating a keyboard that provides illumination
to the keys for low light or dark environments. The end result of their
work is in the form of a product called the EluminX keyboard. Let’s
see if this keyboard is more than just a keyboard with lights shall we?
Company Background
Before we dive into the review of the EluminX
keyboard, let’s
take a quick look at who Auravision is since I’m sure many of you
have never heard of this company (I sure didn’t!). Auravision is
the result of the merger between two companies based in California – Ennova
Corporation and GWD Group. Auravision has primarily focused on using
a patented ElectroLuminescent technologym, which was first used for military
applications such as ruggedized laptops, to create unique products such
as the EluminX keyboard for consumer use. The company’s tag line
is “_get illuminated”.
